Navigating the In-Between: When Transition Teaches You Who You Are

Navigating transitions has a way of humbling us. When you’re caught in the in-between, that fragile space between where you’ve come from and where you’re headed, it feels like everything is new, foreign, and overwhelming. You’re trying to re-create yourself, trying to figure out who you are in this new chapter, and it’s exhausting. It’s uncomfortable. It’s raw. And yet, life doesn’t pause for us to catch our breath while we sort it all out. Life keeps life-ing.

Three months ago, I relocated to a new city, ready to embrace change and carve out a fresh path for myself. I was trying to find my people, my tribe, and build a sense of home. But the process wasn’t easy. Being in this in-between stage felt like I was walking on shaky ground, challenging everything I thought I knew about myself. And just when I thought I was making progress, the chaos found me.

Navigating Transitions

The Initial Struggles

Two weeks before my son’s wedding, life hit me with a double dose of stress. My search for professionals to help me look my best ended in a disaster, a hairstylist literally turned my head into a blonde and red zebra. I was scrambling to find anybody who could undo the mess before such an important day. I was already emotionally drained, and this added a new layer of frustration and anxiety. It was the kind of moment where you feel like the universe is testing your limits, seeing how much you can handle.

The Gut-Punch

And then, as if life thought I could handle just a little more, I received a brutal gut-punch. Someone I thought was a new friend, a person I trusted, completely blindsided me. I’d shared my excitement about possibly purchasing the condo I was renting, which wasn’t even on the market yet.

My landlord was open to receiving an offer, and the one person I confided in decided to undercut me by swooping in with a cash offer behind my back. Just like that, my vision of home disappeared, along with my belief that this person was a friend. It was one of those moments where you feel betrayed on a deep, personal level—a hard-hitting reminder that not everyone is who they seem.

Lessons Learned

So here I was, in the thick of transition. Exhausted. Uncomfortable. Trying to reimagine myself in this new life while dealing with the daily challenges life threw at me. And I learned something important in this messy, chaotic process: transition isn’t just about arriving somewhere new. It’s about discovering who you are when the unexpected happens. It’s about learning to breathe through discomfort and finding strength when everything feels like it’s crumbling.

  1. Resilience is Key: I didn’t just learn about hairstylists, condos, or the meaning of friendship; I learned, once again, that I have the resilience to keep moving forward, no matter how gut-wrenching or exhausting it is to be in this in-between place. Transition is a crucible that forges strength. It pushes you to your limits and helps you discover what you’re truly made of.

  2. Trust Your Instincts: The betrayal by someone I thought was a friend taught me to trust my instincts more. We often have gut feelings about people, but in the midst of transition, it can be easy to overlook these signs. I’ve learned to pay closer attention to my intuition and act on it when necessary.

  3. Finding Your Tribe: Building a new community is one of the most rewarding aspects of transition. It’s also one of the most challenging. I learned that true connections take time to form, and sometimes, the people you meet early in your journey may not be the ones who stick around. But that’s okay. It’s part of the process of finding your tribe.

  4. Embrace the Uncomfortable: The in-between is often uncomfortable. It’s a space of uncertainty, where you’re constantly questioning and redefining yourself. Embrace this discomfort. It’s a sign that you’re growing and evolving. Lean into the uncomfortable moments, for they are often the ones that teach you the most valuable lessons.

  5. Self-Compassion: Finally, I learned the importance of self-compassion. It’s easy to be hard on yourself during transition, to beat yourself up for every misstep. But it’s crucial to be kind to yourself. Acknowledge your efforts, celebrate your small victories, and give yourself grace when things don’t go as planned.

To Every Woman Embracing Change

To every woman out there who’s embracing change, rediscovering herself, and navigating transitions: you’re not alone. The messy middle is teaching you lessons you can only learn by going through it, and those lessons will shape you in ways that make you stronger, wiser, and maybe even a little fiercer. Keep going. You’re becoming.

Transition is a journey, not a destination. It’s a time of growth, learning, and self-discovery. It may be challenging, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. So take a deep breath, keep moving forward, and remember that you’re exactly where you’re meant to be.

You’ve got this. 💖
